Noah Lyles had laughed off the Canadian team at the 2024 World Athletics Relays and in an unpredictable turn of events, the US men's 4x100m relay team got disqualified and the Canadian team took the gold at the Paris Olympics. In the wake of Noah Lyles testing positive for COVID-19, Christian Coleman blundered in the baton pass to Kenny Bednarek.
Noah Lyles, 27, is a six-time world champion and recently earned his maiden Olympic gold in the 100m. He clocked 9.79s and secured the win ahead of Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson (also 9.79s) by the barest of margins. In the 200m finals, Lyles ran in 19.70s to take the bronze, despite having tested positive for COVID-19.
In the 4x100m relay finals, Lyles' absence from the roster didn't work in the team's favor. Christian Coleman botched the first handoff to Bednarek, and the team got disqualified with Canada finishing on top in 37.50s. After this, an old clip of Noah Lyles acting unaware of the Canadian team resurfaced.
At the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Nassau, the US men's 4x100m relay team finished first in 37.40, setting a world-leading time. Canada trailed in second with 37.89s. When the reigning 100m world champion was asked whether he considered Canada a threat going forward, he asserted that he didn't see a potential threat from the Canadian team.
"Who? Who?” he repeated pretending to not hear. (via an X post)
The men alongside him, Kenny Bednarek and Courtney Lindsey also chimed in to laugh off the team, who became champions at the ongoing quadrennial Games.
Noah Lyles took pride in his 200m bronze medal win
Lyles is the third-fastest man in the 200m history and holds a personal best of 19.31s. As the reigning 200m world champion, the Olympic defeat came about after he tested positive for COVID-19. In an interview with NBC, he shared how his 200m bronze medal made him proud since he gathered the courage to compete with ill health.
"I definitely say that it’s taken its toll for sure but I’ve never been more proud of myself for being able to come out here and getting a bronze medal where last Olympics I was very disappointed, and this time, I couldn’t be more proud," he said. (via CNN)
His mindset going into the race was not to panic, since he had run in worse conditions previously. Noah Lyles ended his Paris Olympics bid with a gold and a bronze.
