Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the gold medal in the 1500m at the Lausanne Diamond League weeks after losing out on the podium positions in the event at the Paris Olympics. After defeating the Olympic Champion Cole Hocker by a formidable lead, he took a subtle dig at arch-rival Josh Kerr for missing events in 2024 after the Paris Olympics.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen put forward an incredible performance at the Lausanne Diamond League in the men's 1500m where he went head-to-head against the Paris Olympic Champion Cole Hocker. The Norwegian athlete won the race with a dominant display after shattering the meet record with a time of 3:27.83. USA's Cole Hocker took the silver medal after clocking 3:29.85.
Soon after the race, the Norwegian athlete spoke about his performance and revealed that he did not get much time to specifically prepare for the race and went on to take a dig at Josh Kerr for missing the event after winning the silver medal at the Paris Olympics.
"Today, it's a lot about seeing where the form is. We haven't had time to do much since we ran in Paris, but it's cool that so many people are showing up - and not just going and hiding after big championships." (as quoted by Citius Mag)
His arch-rival, Josh Kerr is set to make his first appearance after winning the silver medal at Paris Olympics on September 5, 2024, at the Zurich Diamond League.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen on failing to defend his title at the Paris Olympics
Jakob Ingebrigtsen took the lead in the finals of the 1500m from the initial moment of the race but could not hold it until the finish line as Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, and Yared Nuguse ran past him to take the podium positions.
Ingebrigtsen took to Instagram to congratulate the winners and share his thoughts on his performance.
"Well, I guess he did show up after all…! Hocker and Nuguse as well. My team always say that “because you have a big mouth and is the one to beat, you have everything to lose in competitions”. Today, Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse and Josh Kerr outsmarted me. They were “the best guys” when it really mattered. And I want to congratulate them all on a great performance! Of course, I am disappointed!" read an excerpt from his statement.
Furthermore, he thanked his team and fans for their unwavering support. Overcoming the loss, Ingebrigtsen went on to win the 5000m at the Paris Olympics.
