Simone Biles and other members of the USA Gymnastics team unveiled the leotards they will be wearing at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday, July 10. This is the first time in history that gymnastics apparel has been released before the start of the Olympic Games.
Following the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials 2024, a five-member team was selected for the Paris Olympics. Simone Biles leads the team for the third straight time, joined by Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera.
The team unveiled their Paris Olympic leotard in a video shared by USA Gymnastics on X. Leotards are essential for gymnasts, giving them the flexibility and space to perform. Biles and her team seemed jubilant as they unboxed the apparel, which is themed around the USA national flag. Along with the Paris hopefuls, fans online were also impressed with the design.
Former American gymnast and Olympian Kathy Johnson Clarke expressed her admiration of the designs, writing:
"Stars, stripes, crystals and pearls all gleaming in red, white and blue! Nothing says Team USA quite like it! This is what dreams are made of!"
"They’re so cute!!" a fan wrote.
"Love love love them! I can’t wait for the Olympics", said another.
Several fans also found similarities between the current leotards and designs from previous editions, particularly the 1996 U.S. Women's gymnastics team. They had won the country's first team gold and were called the 'Magnificent Seven'.
"It's kinda giving Magnificent Seven", a fan wrote.
"Oooh, I like these and they make me think of the 96 leos," another fan commented.
"Wait usually don’t like white bottom leo’s but these are cute they’re giving 90s-00s leo vibes," a user wrote.
The leotards Simone Biles and Co. will wear at the 2024 Paris Olympics will have a record 10,000 crystals
The leotards Simone Biles wore at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won four gold medals, had 5,000 crystals on them. This was a record back then, but it was broken by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics leotard, which had 6,400 crystals on it.
Team USA's leotards are manufactured by GK Elite. The company had said in 2016 that 5,000 was the ‘peak crystal’ they could use. They broke that record in 2021 and have now outdone themselves again, with 10,000 crystals on the 2024 design.
“I am obsessed with how the lights of the arena reflect off the crystals,” said Lee about the 2024 leotards (via NY Times)
