Gabby Thomas had a disappointing race at the Los Angeles Grand Prix in the 200m race on Saturday, where she was up against Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone, who clocked a personal best and clinched the gold medal in the event. The 27-year-old could only manage a sixth-place finish.
Gabby Thomas began the 2024 Olympic season on a high note after putting forward an incredible performance at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in the 300m race, clocking 35.75. Moreover, she led Team USA to gold medal glory at the World Athletics Relays in both the 4x400m relays and the 4x100m relays. Her second leg in the 4x400m was lauded by fans when she clocked a split of 49.58s and the team clinched the gold medal with a world-leading time.
Gabby Thomas participated in the LA Grand Prix in her signature 200m event, but was unable to deliver her best performance. She took to X to express her disappointment about her performance, but still had an optimistic stance on the upcoming events leading up to the coveted Olympic Trials.
"Obviously didn’t look like myself today, it happens every season when I compete in the middle of this training block, but I committed to the meet long ago, and I just can’t pull out when fans look forward to seeing us compete. I’m okay, everything is going according to plan," she wrote.
Despite not feeling at her best, she decided to pursue the event and not pull out last moment because she did not want to disappoint her fans, who were there to witness her compete.
Gabby Thomas on running a sub-11 100m early in the Olympic season
Gabby Thomas ran her first sub-11 100m of the Olympic season at the Texas Relays in March 2024, which was among the first outdoor races of the highly anticipated season. She opened up to Citius Magazine on executing such an amazing race early in the season.
"I feel like I have a chip on my shoulder with the 100 because no one ever considers me a 100m runner. But I feel like l work really hard, and I'm getting better, my start's getting better, my transitions getting better and so I do want to prove to everyone that I could run it because I know I can run with the heavy hitter 100m runners," she said at 1:25 in the video.
With her exceptional athletic prowess, Gabby Thomas is one of the favorites to be a part of the U.S. Olympic team, however, with athletes like Sha'Carri Richardson in contention for the Olympic berth, the upcoming trials would be more competitive than ever.
