2008 Bejing Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson recently reacted to her five-year-old daughter Drew Hazel performing a cartwheel on the balance beam. Johnson bagged four medals at the 2008 Games.
The former gymnast and her husband Andrew East welcomed their first kid Drew Hazel on October 29, 2019. Recently, East shared a video of Johnson reacting to her daughter excitedly informing her mother about her defining moment of performing a cartwheel on the balance beam.
Johnson's connection with the balance beam runs deep, stretching back to the 2008 Beijing Games where she bagged a gold medal. She collected 16.225 points to surpass her teammate Nastia Liukin and China's Cheng Fei, who scored 16.025 and 15.950 points, respectively.
Upon hearing about her daughter's new skill, the former American gymnast was stunned and her face lit up with joy and amazement.
"I can do cartwheels," said her daughter.
To which the former gymnast and Olympian replied:
"You can do cartwheel on the beam? Are you serious?"
Further, when Johnson asked if Drew was frightened, the young prodigy denied it, to which, the Olympic medalist chimed in:
"You can do a cartwheel on the beam?"
"Olympic gymnastics gives me FOMO" - When Shawn Johnson opened up about missing competing at the Games
Although Shawn Johnson retired from competing in gymnastics events in 2012, citing persistent problems with her left knee, she is closely connected to the sport in many ways.
The former gymnast was present at the 2024 Olympic Games, working for Yahoo Sports, covering gymnastics. During the recent Games, she acknowledged that while she feels content and accomplished after winning four Olympic medals, watching Olympic gymnastics now makes her feel nostalgic and reminds her of her past self.
"I won four Olympic medals, including one gold, and although I definitely feel settled and fulfilled in my life, watching Olympic gymnastics gives me FOMO because the person I was back in the day comes back out," she said (via cosmopolitian.com). "The second I step into the arena, I feel transported back to that life, and it’s a real déjà vu moment. Seeing what the girls are going through, all their excitement, it’s so much fun."
Shawn Johnson bagged three silver medals in the all-around, team, and floor events at the 2008 Beijing Games.
