The roster for the US women's gymnastics team final has been released for the Paris Olympics, and Hezly Rivera is missing from the list. Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, and Jade Carey will be competing in the Team Finals. The decision to remove Rivera from the team has gathered dismayed reactions from fans online.
USA Gymnastics announced the gymnasts for the Team Finals in the Paris Olympics on social media. Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Suni Lee will be competing in the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Chiles, Carey, and Biles will be representing the team in the vault.
"Set in stone, ready to bring it home. The U.S. Women will compete for a spot on the medal podium during tomorrow's Team Final!" USA Gymnastics wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
A few fans online were surprised by Hezly Rivera's omission from the Team roster. One fan wrote on X:
"Omg what happened to Hezly."
Another fan claimed the decision was unfair and said:
"This is not fair and it’s a dumb decision. Hezly has been more consistent on beam than Suni and Jordan! Why would you not put her up. He made one slip up and she didn’t even fall off the beam. Mind you if she didn’t make that mistake she would have beaten Suni!"
Here are a few more reactions from fans online:
"Ahhhh man, you guys just Courtney McCool’d Hezley!!!!! Shame on the leaders!! There’s no reason why she can’t be up on one event!! SHAME!!!!" a fan wrote.
"Oh this breaks my heart for Hezly. I hope she's ok," another fan commented.
"What was the point of giving Hezley a spot on the Olympic team if she is not going to do anything in the team final. I am sad for her," a fan opined.
Hezly Rivera on her strengths to help Team USA at the Paris Olympics
Before making her Olympics debut in Paris, Hezly Rivera, who showcased her prowess with a dominant performance at the US Olympic Gymnastics Trials, opened up about her strengths in an interview with People magazine. She was quoted as saying:
"My strengths that I bring to Team USA are my bars and my beam because I think my form sets me apart. I think I'm a very clean gymnast. I have some difficulty, obviously not the highest difficulty, but I'm working my way up there and I think that my execution really sets me apart.”
She also spoke about her mindset while competing at the Olympic Trials:
"My mindset during the trials was kind of like I had nothing to lose, so I told myself, 'Just go out there and do what you've been doing in the gym'."
