In a post-race interview, Jakob Ingebrigtsen reflected on his victory at the Monaco Diamond League on July 12. He was full of confidence after cruising towards victory in the 1500m race and made a bold claim about setting the world record.
Ingebrigtsen showcased sheer dominance at the Monaco Diamond League in Herculis with his incredible 1500m run. He stood atop the podium after recording a world lead of 3:26.73, which is the sixth fastest time in history and the world's fastest time since 2015. He trounced Timothy Cheruiyot, who clocked 3:28.71, and Brian Komen, who recorded 3:28.80.
Speaking to Citius Mag after the race, the Norwegian athlete opened up about his form and his goals for the future. He also exuded confidence in running a world record very soon.
"I never know a 100% where I am at physically," said Jakob Ingebrigtsen. "Of course, you have a gut feeling and I felt strong, but, it's all about personal improvement, getting a couple tenths, half a second - and if I can do that consistently, there's only a matter of time before I run a world record."
Jakob Ingebrigtsen issues a strong message ahead of the Paris Olympics
Jakon Ingebrigtsen did not have the expected start to 2024 as he skipped the indoor season, citing an Achilles injury. He opened his season on May 25 at the Prefontaine Classic but lost to his arch-rival Josh Kerr in the Bowerman Mile. In a post-race interview with Citius Mag, the athlete issued a strong message, saying he will hop on every opportunity he gets to win.
"Especially for a race like this, there is a lot of nerves. There are a lot of things that could go wrong," said Jakob Ingebrigtsen. "So, it is all about you know, taking control. I think that is one of the main things before the race and also in the race. The person that wants it the most and controls the race is usually the guy that wins. It’s all about taking what’s yours and I am going to grab every opportunity that I get."
After winning the 1500m race at the Monaco Diamond League, Jakob Ingebrigtsen also spoke about his Paris Olympic goals.
"I see that I am increasing my potential every year. It is really important for athletes to believe in what they are doing. When you achieve great results, it is easier to be confident for the future competitions. I am excited about Paris. I feel strong, I will do my best and hopefully bring home the gold medal," he said (via European Athletics).
Jakon Ingebrigtsen qualified for the Paris Olympics after delivering an exceptional performance in the 1500m and 5000m events at the European Athletics Championships. Ingebrigtsen will next be seen in a terrific showdown against his on-field rival Josh Kerr at the 2024 Summer Games.
