Lindsey Vonn, the acclaimed ski racer with 82 World Cup wins, made her successful return from retirement. At 40, Vonn once again plans to conquer the snowy regions and recently shared her goals after her latest race.
Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami, who is the defending World Cup champion, has won the Super-G event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany with Vonn clinching the 13th spot. According to the Ashe Post and Times, Vonn shared her thoughts on her newest race, and what her plans are for the upcoming ones.
“For me, it was really good to ride without taking too many risks. I wanted to stay healthy and nothing more. It gives me more confidence for the world championships. The snow was soft and the light was not optimal and a lot can happen. The goal wasn't to be here this season at all -- of course the only thing that matters are medals at the world championships. Saalbach is a pretty easy course, so it should suit me pretty well, if I can get some fast skis I should be in good shape,” she said.
Lindsey Vonn, the three-time Olympic medallist, suffered a crash in her last Super-G race at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Before her crash, she was contending for a spot on the podium. Vonn retired in 2019 due to injuries and also had a titanium knee replacement. However, she decided to return to the sport.
Lindsey Vonn shares her journey of being an inspiration for aspiring talents
Lindsey Vonn has won four world cup overall championships and won the Olympic gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. This feat was the first for a female skier from the US. During a segment of FIS Alpine, “Lindsey Vonn - An extraordinary return | FIS Alpine”, she talked about being a ray of hope for others. She said [3:46 onwards]:
“My goal is to enjoy it, you know, it's it's going to be an adventure. No one's ever done this before. I think I hope that I inspire people to believe in themselves, more than anything, even when people tell them that they can't or they shouldn't or they're never going to be good enough.
"I think you are good enough and I've always believed in myself no matter what anyone says and so no matter what this journey ends up being, I know that I believed in myself and I think that's the only thing that matters.”
Vonn made a notable comeback from retirement and has been showing promise. In St. Anton, she achieved the fourth spot in super-g and sixth spot in downhill. Vonn has also secured an unprecedented 18 wins at Lake Louise, Canada.
