Lindsey Vonn is one of the most successful skiers of all time, having won 82 World Cup races. While the American called time on her career in 2019, she has now returned to the slopes, and her recent fourth-place finish at the St. Anton World Cup in Austria left the likes of Billie Jean King, Caroline Wozniacki, and more impressed.
Vonn was one of the most dominant skiers on the World Cup circuit for nearly two decades between 2001 and 2019, but she retired from the sport after repeated injuries to her knee. In April 2024, the 40-year-old underwent a partial knee replacement and a few months later announced that she would be making a professional comeback to the slopes.
Vonn is now officially three races deep into her comeback, and she's only getting better. At the St. Anton World Cup in Austria, she finished fourth in the Super G and sixth in the downhill. Reflecting on her race, Lindsey Vonn shared a post on Instagram and wrote,
“What a weekend!! 4th and 6th place in my second and third race back....every day it's getting better. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported me, means a lot! Always have so much fun racing in Austria because they love skiing as much as I do.”
Reacting to her achievement, tennis legend Billie Jean King commented,
“Outstanding!”
Former tennis World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki wrote,
“💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 incredible 🔥.”
Vonn's fellow skiers also extended their support, with Sofia Goggia commenting,
“Saying I am impressed is not enough.”
“LFG LINDSEY. LEGEND” - added Olympic skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen.
Lindsey Vonn to race at Cortina d'Ampezzo
After her impressive run in St. Anton, Lindsey Vonn will return to action between January 16 - 19, at the Cortina d'Ampezzo World Cup stop in Italy. Showing her anticipation for the race, the American told Eurosport she felt really confident, saying,
"I think I'm in a good place. I really wanted to keep building every day on my results and I think it's perfect timing coming into Cortina. I feel really confident. My equipment is getting better every day. I just have to get that last 10 or 15 per cent that I know I can get to. I have a lot of confidence in Cortina so I hope I can put everything together there.”
Lindsey Vonn has had a stellar record racing in Cortina d'Ampezzo, having claimed 12 of her 82 World Cup wins here. On January 16-19, the 40-year-old will compete in the Super G and downhill events, and fans will be eager to see if she can make it onto the podium.
