The 33rd Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Paris Olympics, are about to kick off in three days, and the Olympics Village has already been opened for the athletes. The village will host an estimated 10,000 athletes, and more than 10 million visitors are expected to arrive during the event.
To accommodate the people visiting the Olympics village, from athletes and volunteers to visitors, the French Olympic Committee has made some world-class arrangements. While FOC has ensured to offer all the luxuries to the people, they have also prioritized keeping sustainability intact.
From cardboard beds and recycled fishing net mattresses to the use of renewable energy for the smooth functioning of the venue, here are some of the details about the enchanting Olympics village of the French event.
All about the Olympics Village for the Paris Olympics 2024
The best in class housing facilities
The French authorities have made use of the vintage "point access blocks" to construct houses for the athletes and the other people involved in the event. In the point-access block design, the buildings have a small footprint and are arranged around a central core with stairs and a small elevator.
The tower height of such buildings ranges from six to 11 stories, with each story containing windows on multiple sides to ensure cross ventilation and reduced use of energy.
For the first eight floors of the buildings, mass timber is used, while for the upper levels, high-quality steel is used. Buildings have been constructed to focus on long-term adaptability, as the houses will be transformed into condominiums, rental apartments, and student housing to accommodate approximately 6,000 residents after the Paris Olympics are concluded.
As per Olympics.com, approximately 2,500–2,800 new homes have been constructed in the Olympics Village.
The sustainable amenities for the athletes
The rooms of the buildings in the Olympics Village will have beds made out of cardboard, which can withstand 50 kilograms (around 550 pounds) of weight. The modular beds will offer room for the athletes to adjust the mattress firmness.
The Olympic athletes will be given blue reversible duvets, which they can keep after the games. Furthermore, the mattresses for the beds are made of recycled fishing nets and will be repurposed after the event. Additionally, 200 bikes and electric shuttles will be provided for convenient transportation around the village.
The dining arrangements for the athletes
To ensure the diets of the athletes and others, an estimated 60,000 meals will be served every day, and the dining area in the village contains 3,260 seats and will be running 24x7, offering food. The cuisines in the Olympics village will vary from French to Asian, Caribbean, African, and a multitude of other options.
The workout area to stay in shape
For the athletes and other officials, a main fitness center has been built that contains more than 350 machines and two saunas.
Additionally, dedicated sports training facilities will be available for activities such as weightlifting and modern pentathlon. A medical clinic will also be there in the Olympics village.
