Before a blockbuster show at the Paris Olympics, fans will get to see some fireworks in the women's 400m at the Paris Diamond League. The entry list for the event is stacked, featuring potential medalists at the Games later this summer.
Headlining the field and the favorites for the win on Sunday, July 7 are Salwa Eid Naser and Marileidy Paulino. Bahrain's Naser will head into the race as the fastest woman on the field with her personal best of 48.14, which is good for third on the all-time list.
The 26-year-old is the 2019 World Champion and 2016 Rio Olympic silver-medalist but is yet to breach the 50-second mark in her 2024 season.
On the other hand, Paulino comes into the race with a personal best of 48.76 seconds, which she clocked while running to gold at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships. The Dominican holds the Olympic silver medals that she won in 2020 and has clocked a beat of 49.30 so far this year.
Outside of Salwa Eid Naser and Marileidy Paulino, Natalia Kaczmarek is the only runner in the women's 400m at the Paris Diamond League to have breached the 49-second mark. The Polish sprinter won gold at the 2020 Olympics in the 4x400m mixed relay and finished behind Paulino to claim silver in Budapest. She is the third fastest woman of 2024 behind Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Nickisha Pryce, with the 48.98 she clocked at the European Athletics Championships.
The next best runners on the field at the Paris Diamond League are America's Alexis Holmes and Netherlands’ Lieke Klaver. Both are World Champions in the relay events and hold personal bests under the 50-second mark, with Holmes the slightly faster sprinter at 49.78, as opposed to Klaver’s 49.81.
Rounding out the competition will be the trio of Lavai Nielson, Andrea Miklos, and Amandine Brossier. Nielson is the most successful runner of the three, having won two World Championships silver and two World Championships bronze in the relay events.
