"Quarantine romance turned into this beautiful relationship"- Shaun White pens heartfelt note for fiancé Nina Dobrev

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev announced that they were engaged in late October. Recently, the snowboarder penned a heartfelt note for his fiancee, giving followers an inside look into their relationship.

White first rose to fame in 2003, when he stormed to gold at the Winter X Games at just 17-years-old. Throughout his career, he would go on to win 12 more Winter X Games golds, as well as three silvers and two bronze. The Americans is also a five-time Olympian, and won the gold in the halfpipe event at the 2006, 2010, and 2018 editions.

White and Dobrev started dating and 2020 during the Covid 19 lockdown, and have been together ever since. The duo share regular updates on their life together with fans, and recently revealed that they were engaged. Now, Shaun White has penned a sweet note for his fiancee, expressing his gratitude for her. Taking to Instagram and sharing a video of their proposal, he wrote:

“Still floating after this night! I'm beside myself to be with this amazing woman and to be joining her beautiful family!! Our quarantine romance turned into this beautiful relationship and now a forever love. Believe me when I say that this app mostly shows us at our best. Behind the curtain like any relationship, we've had our struggles. But it's our ability to communicate and repair that keeps us moving forward together.”

“I'm so thankful for the life lessons, gratitude, adventure and love that Nina has taught me, and I only wish to show her the same in return. I guess we are doing the dam thing, baby! Anyways... I'm not crying, you're crying," he added.

Behind Shaun White’s proposal for Nina Dobrev

In an interview with Vogue, Shaun White revealed that his plans to propose to Nina Dobrev were thwarted multiple times before the couple finally got their perfect moment. The snowboarder shared that he originally intended to get down on one knee on the duo’s summer vacation, but had to scrap that plan when Dobrev hurt her knee. He explained that his next plan was for November, when the two would travel to Cape Town together, but he decided against it as it felt obvious and he wanted to surprise her,

"She’s an extremely organized person who is rarely surprised, but she loves being surprised," he told Vogue.

In the end, Shaun White decided to propose in a random October week at The Golden Swan restaurant in New York City. He got his publicist to send Dobrev a fake invitation for an intimate CFDA/Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour, only for her to arrive into a private room where the Olympic champion was waiting for her.

"He made the invite look so legitimate,” Dobrev said in the same interview.

The duo celebrated their engagement with champagne and caviar with their friends immediately after the proposal,

“Eventually we realized—other than the caviar—we hadn't eaten anything. So we ordered Shake Shack and dumplings to the Golden Swan,” Dobrev recalled.

On the competitive side of things, Shaun White last competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, which turned out to be his swansong. He finished fourth in the halfpipe event.
