The reigning 400-meter Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas received a heartbreaking update recently after the runner sustained an injury at the Olympic trials, and subsequently, she might be missing the opportunity to defend her title at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo is a leading track-running star, who has represented her Caribbean nation at numerous elite competitions, often standing atop the podium. The 30-year-old athlete is a two-time Olympic champion on the trot, winning gold in the 400m event both times. Apart from that, Miller-Uibo is also a one-time world champion and has won the Diamond League trophy four times in her career.
She has represented the Bahamas in the Olympics three times, beginning in 2012 in London, but it was at the Rio Olympics in 2016 when the sprinter earned gold for the first time in the 400m domain.
She successfully defended her title at the following quadrennial event in Tokyo after defeating Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic and the legendary American Olympian, Allyson Felix.
But as luck would have it, Shaunae Miller-Uibo is set to miss the 400m event at the upcoming Paris Olympics as she got injured while running the 200m at the trials. Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) President Drumeco Archer has confirmed her injury, narrating the incident, Archer stated (via Eyewitness News Bahamas):
"She is the darling of the sport, and she will be missed. Unfortunately, she's been dinged up with some injuries; she was in fine form coming into the World Relays."
Owen M. also posted the update on Bahamian's injury on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
"BREAKING NEWS: Shaunae Miller Uibo won’t defend her 400m Olympic title in Paris. She sustained an injury during the 200m heats at the Bahamian Olympic Trials on Thursday."
Shaunae Miller-Uibo had already punched her Olympics ticket in 4x400 mixed relays
While Shaunae Miller-Uibo might be missing the 400m event at the Paris Olympics, her participation in the 4x400 mixed relay is yet to be ruled out as she has already qualified for the event during the 2024 World Athletics Relays following a victory in Heat 1 of the event in May.
She confirmed the news through an Instagram post, writing:
"We are headed to Paris!!! It was an honor to compete in the front of our Bahamian crowd! They brought the energy we needed to book our tickets to the Olympic Games this summer, and we say thank you."
Before this, Miller-Uibo also won her 400-meter race during the Zurich Diamond League in March. The race held significance for the 2022 world champion and her fans as she made her return to the track after delivering her first child.
