Sha'Carri Richardson recently opened up about the importance of being featured in Essence magazine, recalling a childhood memory with her grandmother, Betty Harp. The athlete concluded her year after competing at the Brussels Diamond League.
The American athlete finished her Olympic campaign with two medals, in the 100m and 4x100m. In the former race, she finished in second place behind Julien Alfred. Alfred clocked 10.72s to clinch gold, as Richardson recorded 10.87s to win the silver.
Following this, she competed in the 4x100m relay race, where she and her team won gold with a time of 41.78s. Soon after this, the athlete went into her off-season. This week, it was announced that she will feature on the cover of Essence magazine's Jan/Feb 2025 issue. Speaking In an interview with the magazine, Sha'Carri Richardson recalled a childhood memory, connecting it to her feelings about featuring in the magazine.
She recalled a moment with her grandmother when the latter used to read the magazine when the athlete was a little girl. She said,
"My experience here today, being on essence cover is an honor. I feel like the little girl inside me has, like, achieved something that we only saw in the magazines. Like, we only saw, like on TV, so it's an honor. It even reminds me of a moment of having with my grandmother. I actually remember her reading Essence when I was younger, so full circle moment to just be here, be on the cover, these beautiful looks and beautiful people."
Sha'Carri Richardson on what she "adores" about herself
In the aforementioned interview, Sha'Carri Richardson opened up about on what she "adores" about herself and what she would like everyone to know about her. She said she behaves exactly how she is everywhere and has no problem in showing her true personality.
She said,
"I want to say one thing about myself that I adore and that I love that most people may not know is that I am always going to show you exactly who I am. I have no problem doing it bceause no matter what I have no problem doing it because no matter what I want people to always walk away from me and being able to say, I understand her. Like, I can't relate to that"
"I mean, I probably can't relate to being an athlete. I probably can't relate to being, successful, but I can relate to being human. I can relate to having experience. I can relate continuing to show up, no matter if it's good, bad, or better, or dead."
Sha'Carri Richardson had an outstanding 2024 season, as after her triumphs at the Paris Olympics, the American athlete was honored with a track being named for her at the Jesse Owens Athletic Complex in her hometown of Dallas, Texas.
