Simone Biles once opened up about getting tutored by her father after opting for homeschooling. Before homeschooling, she attended Benfer Elementary School in Harris County, Texas, till 2012.
After her biological mother Shannon's inability to provide for her and her siblings due to alcohol and drug addiction, Biles was adopted by Ronald and Nellie Biles when she was six. She soon pursued her passion for gymnastics which later grew stronger. She decided to homeschool, dedicating more time to training.
Biles' mother Nellie chose Ronald as the gymnast's home tutor. In her autobiography, Courage to Soar, published in 2016, she reflected on the experience of being tutored by her father while balancing her training.
Biles described how difficult it was for her to learn from her father. She stated that her father always thought she was "a whiner and a procrastinator" which frustrated him, leading to frequent tension during their lessons.
"He simply adjusted his hours so that he could devote four of them to tutoring me in between my morning and afternoon workouts at the gym," Biles stated. "Right from the start, it was a disaster. What teenager wants her father teaching her history and algebra? Dad thought I was a whiner and a procrastinator, which made him exasperated and annoyed. We ended up fussing at each other almost every single day."
When Simone Biles opened up on her father's advice that pushed her to opt for homeschooling
In her autobiography, Simone Biles reflected on her father's advice which made her realize that she had a unique talent and passion for gymnastics. Following her father's advice, she decided to fully embrace gymnastics and pursue it with all her dedication, opting for homeschooling.
"What finally pushed me to make up my mind was something my dad had told me years before. He’d said, 'Simone, never squander what God has given you.' When I thought about that, I realized God had given me the ability to do gymnastics in a powerful way. He’d also gifted me with a love for the sport and a passion for competing. I didn’t want to waste that. Once I approached it that way, the decision seemed inevitable."
Biles' decision was a turning point as she later became the most decorated gymnast in America.
