Noah Lyles was heavily trolled by the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kike Hernandez after the team's World Series win over New York Yankees. Hernandez trolled the Olympic champion for his controversial 'world champions of what?' comments, which were originally directed at the NBA.

Lyles made the controversial comments last year during a press conference at the World Championships, arguing that NBA champions shouldn't be called world champions because it isn't an international competition.

"You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have "world champion" on their head," Lyles said. "World champion of what? The United States? Don't get me wrong. I love the U.S., at times, but that ain't the world. That is not the world," he said.

He also argued that the NBA didn't have any country's flags, which didn't make it a world championship.

"We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show that they are represented. There ain't no flags in the NBA," he added.

While the Olympic champion's comments initially drew the ire of several basketball players including Kevin Durant, it quickly spread into the NFL and now the MLB.

After the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series over the New York Yankees in game 5, a jubilant Kike Hernandez trolled Lyles during an interview, saying:

"World Series champions. S**k it, Noah Lyles."

Hernandez is a Puerto Rican professional baseball player and signed with the Dodgers in 2023, having previously played for the team from 2015 to 2020.

A year after stirring up the controversy, Noah Lyles claimed that his point got lost in translation and he didn't intend to disrespect the NBA players.

The 100m Olympic champion argued that he didn't want the World Champion title to be given away to those who hadn't earned it.

"I feel that it took on a life of itself. The NBA was just an example. The point got lost in translation along the way,” Lyles explained. “The point was supposed to be that the U.S. has so many people with the title of World Champion or Olympic Champion, and we seem to give it to others who don’t actually have the title. Why do that? They’re already great!" he said in an interview with Buzzfeed in August 2024.

Lyles further added:

"They are already dignified in that, let’s celebrate the other sports out there who have taken on the world and are coming back and saying, ‘Hey, we did this for you.’ We want to be celebrated just as much."

The American sprinter won the gold medal in the 100m at the Paris Olympics. He also took the bronze medal in the 200m finals despite running with COVID.
