Salwa Eid Naser has recently been announced as one of the athletes of the Athlos NYC league launched by Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian. The 2019 world champion is slated to feature in the women’s 400m at the meet, scheduled later this month on September 26 at the Icahn Stadium in New York City.
Born in Nigeria, Naser represents Bahrain in international track and field competitions. She recently bagged the silver medal in the women’s 400m at the 2024 Paris Olympics by recording a season-best time of 48.53, finishing only behind Marileidy Paulino who achieved an Olympic record of 48.17s.
Following her impressive show at the quadrennial games, Athlos NYC revealed on their X (previously Twitter) that Salwa Eid Naser will be featuring in the event’s inaugural season, captioning the tweet:
“Announcing *world champion* @salwaeidnaser1 as our next ATHLOS trailblazer 🔥Salwa will be competing in the ATHLOS 400m — meet her at the finish line.”
With this, Salwa Eid Naser joins an elite list of athletes at the Athlos NYC including Olympic medalists Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, Paulino, and Kendra Harrison. Some other confirmed list of athletes who are a part of the competition are Alexis Holmes, Torrie Lewis, Lieke Klaver, Annie Tagoe, and Alaysha Johnson.
Notably, Athlos NYC is an event exclusively for female athletes, featuring only track events like the 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, and 100m hurdles, among others. The event will witness American popular singer and rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, performing during the opening ceremony of the league.
In addition, the league will be offering cash prizes to the top six athletes in each category. The first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-placed athletes will be awarded $60K, $25K, $10K, $8K, $5K, and $2.5K, respectively.
