Murphy headed to the 2016 Rio Olympics to make his debut at the Summer Games. His effort swept the 100m and 200m backstroke titles and his 4x100m medley relay leg performance broke the world record previously held by Aaron Piersol.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the US team broke the 4x100m medley relay world record time and won the gold with a joint effort by Murphy, Caeleb Dressel, Michael Andrew, and Zach Apple in a time of 3:26.78.

Ryan Murphy will make his way to the 2024 Paris Olympics. He won the 100m backstroke event at the Olympic Trials, in a time of 52.22, living up to the honor of a top seed. He was four-tenths of a second faster than his semifinal race.

Murphy competed in 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics to make a name for himself as a backstroke specialist. However, the humongous stage added to the pressure, and his anxiety levels peaked when he competed.

In a post-race interview with NBC, Murphy talked about enjoying his races more now than he used to. He learned to control his nerves.

"I think I enjoy it a little bit more than I used to. I used to feel like I was gonna throw up before every race. But now, I can take it in a little bit more.”

Murphy will race the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke as well but the decision to compete in the former can alter last moment.
