Trey Cunningham has come out as gay, admitting that it is one of the scariest things he has ever done. Trey Cunningham disclosed that he has always been keen on keeping his life private but he felt it was the right time to inform his family, friends, and the whole world.
In an interview with the New York Times, the 25-year-old disclosed that he realized his sexuality at the age of 20 and declared it to his family and friends before publicly coming out.
"Scariest thing I've ever done," Trey Cunningham opened up about the first time he decided to speak to his family and friends about his sexuality.
"We say our goals out loud. If there’s something we want to achieve, we say it. Putting something in words makes it real. There are lots of people who are in this weird space. They’re not out. But it is kind of understood," he added.
Cunningham also said that he gave his parents a "grace period" of five years.
"So I had certain expectations of what my life would look like, and it took me a little while to get my head around it looking different to that," the 25-year-old said.
"What was true for me was also true for my parents. They had certain expectations for their little boy, for what his life would be like, and that’s OK. I gave them a five-year grace period. I had to take my time. They could take theirs, too."
