Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian recently shared the possible reason behind track superstars such as Sha'Carri Richardson not competing in his inaugural Athlos meet. This comes nearly two weeks after the successful conclusion of the meet at the Icahn Stadium, in New York.
The Athlos NYC 2024 meet saw numerous Olympic superstars such as Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, and Masai Russell compete in various events of the competition and win lucrative prize money. However, numerous other renowned track athletes such as Richardson, and Julien Alfred skipped the women-only meet.
Ohanian recently shed light on this issue, saying that the Paris Olympics played a major role in this decision of the athletes. Speaking during Justin Gatlin's Ready Set Go podcast, Ohanian added that he is a big admirer of Sha'Carri Richardson and was touched by the energy of the track athlete.
Ohanian said (at 19:30):
"It's basically the same whether it's an Olympic year or not but yeah especially the case if it's an Olympic year. It's a long season in that sense because you're a little kid and you're looking forward to go to the Olympics and that's a huge drain and then you have the Diamond League final."
He added:
"We asked what would you think about this happening at the end of the season and some of the ladies were realistically you know, 'I just don't have it in me' and that's fine we'll be back next year. A lot of the ladies were like 'great' and a part of it is because you know the track season is actually short by comparision (to tennis)."
Sha'Carri Richardson ended her season at the 2024 Diamond League final in Brussels, approximately two weeks before Ohanian's Athlos meet. The Texas native competed in just two Diamond League events in Zurich and Brussels after her Paris Olympics campaign.
Alexis Ohanian opened up about the possibility of having oval tracks at his inaugural Athlos NYC 2024 meet
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian recently shed light on the possibility of having oval tracks in his debut Athlos NYC 2024 meet.
Speaking in the Ready Set Go podcast, Ohanian claimed that he had asked the organizers to explore the possibility of having oval tracks for the meet. He said (at 11:28):
"I admitted that I was asking if we could not have an oval track at first. Because I came at this also thinking of Formula 1 Miami."
The meet concluded on September 26 and saw numerous intriguing features such as athletes entering the track with background music playing and also the crown that was presented to the winners of the races.
