Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian shared his thoughts on bringing back his track meet 'Athlos' for its second edition in the upcoming year. The track meet which was held in New York City earlier this year marked the end of the track season and received great praise from fans for being a 'one of its kind' track meet.
Ohanian had launched Athlos in an attempt to pioneer change in the track scene and women's sports. Along with featuring some of the fastest track athletes in the world like Gabby Thomas and Brittany Brown, among others, Ohanian focused on the entertainment aspect of the sport while also making sure that the spectators had an incredible time witnessing the event.
To put forward a great show for the spectators in the stadium as well as fans who were streaming the event live, Athlos featured performances by Megan Thee Stallion and D-Nice. Along with that, the event was made completely accessible by free streaming on social media platforms like YouTube and X.
Ohanian recently reacted to a question by the popular track and field page, ' Track Spice' about season 2 of Athlos.
"Are you coming back with a season 2 Athlos next year? ’m looking forward to it. @alexisohanian," read the question.
To which the co-founder of Reddit responded by saying:
"Thank you! We really should.... shouldn't we....."
Alexis Ohanian opens up on his decision to launch Athlos
Alexis Ohanian spoke about his decision to launch Athlos in an interview during the inaugural edition of the track meet. The co-founder of Reddit expressed that he had never been to a track meet until the U.S. Olympic Trails this year and was very impressed by the performances of various athletes.
However, he felt that as the trials were stacked with multiple back-to-back events, the stories of athletes could not reach the masses.
“I had never been to a track meet before and then I went to my first one in Eugene. I saw the (Olympic) Qualifiers and so that was incredible right. I was like ‘okay this is so exhilarating’, and then I'm watching Tara (Davis-Woodhall) who is so dynamic, she's such a star and she has her section of the stadium all gassed up for one of her jumps but at the same time there's like a race going on. And as a casual sort of first-timer, I'm torn between two storylines that I know I should be paying attention to," he said.
He believed that Athlos would give the athletes a platform to share their stories with the masses as well as help bridge the disparity in the popularity of the sport during the off-season.
