Serena Williams' husband and Athlos founder Alexis Ohanian reacted to Keely Hodgkinson winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2024. The British middle-distance runner received the award on Wednesday (Dec 18).
The 22-year-old finished ahead of the likes of Joe Root (former England cricket team captain) and Luke Littler (English Darts player) to win the award. The BBC shared a video of Keely Hodgkinson's on-stage moment on X.
Ohanian, a vocal supporter of women's track and field, reacted to the video and shared a congratulatory tweet for the British athlete. He wrote:
"Congrats @keelyhodgkinson"
Ohanian had also congratulated Keely Hodgkinson after the London Diamond League 2024 where the British athlete registered the 800m world lead by clocking a run time of 1:54.61.
Hodgkison had an impressive year in 2024 where she clinched the 800m gold medal at the Paris Olympics. She also bagged top podium finishes in this distance at the Prefontaine Classic and the European Championships.
Keely Hodgkinson opens up about her chances of breaking the 800m world record after winning major award from the BBC
Keely Hodgkison spoke about her chances of breaking the Women's 800m world record. The athlete discussed this in a BBC interview after she received the organization's Sports Personality of the Year award in 2024.
The 22-year-old stated that she thinks she is quite close to breaking the world record, especially after the performances she produced in 2024. She also mentioned that she has a lot of time to improve and is looking forward to the upcoming years in her career. Hodgkison said:
"I'm pretty close [to the world record], I would like to think. I have seen this year what my body is capable of and I'm excited to push on. That world record is something I will always have in the back of my head. But I have so many years to get stronger so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens."
During the conversation, Keely Hodgkinson also made a special mention of her coaches, Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, and expressed her trust in them. Painter and Meadows themselves bagged BBC's Coach of the Year award at the event.
Currently, Hodgkinson is sixth in the all-time list of fastest 800m female sprinters with a run time of 1:54.61 that she registered earlier this year at the London Diamond League. Two-time World champion Jarmila Kratochvilova heads this list with a time of 1:53.28.
