"To show myself that I could do it" - Suni Lee opens up on the reason she competed at the Paris Olympics
Suni Lee took home three medals from the 2020 Tokyo Games, including a gold in the women's individual all-around event after collecting a stunning 57.433 points to defeat Rebec Andrade and Angelina Melnikova.
However, soon after the Olympics, she was diagnosed with kidney issues that kept her away from the gymnastics arena and forced her to end her collegiate gymnastics career prematurely.
After navigating her health issues, Lee made a return to the sport with the Paris Games in her sights. After the Games, she said in an interview that the only reason to compete in her latest Olympics was to prove to herself that she could succeed. She said (via Glamour.com),
“The whole point of coming back for the last Olympics was to show myself that I could do it."
Suni Lee collected a gold medal in the team event and bronze medals in the individual all-around and uneven bars events.
