Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce cheered for New Zealand in their Rugby match against China at the Paris Olympics extending her support to Michaela Blyde, who was star-struck to meet the Jamaican athlete for the first time in the Olympic village. The Jamaican athlete was present in the stands as New Zealand triumphed over China with a score of 43-5.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce announced earlier this year that she would be making her final Olympic appearance in Paris. After competing in the professional circuit since she was 20 years old, the Jamaican decided to bid adieu to the sport to explore other opportunities as well as enjoy her time with her family.
Fraser-Pryce, known for her quick running style and impressive fashion sense, is arguably one of the most popular track and field athletes around the world. Many athletes consider her to be an idol and Michaela Blyde is one of them.
Blyde was awe-struck when she saw Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce for the first time in the Olympic Village and took to Instagram asking the Jamaican to be friends with her. She expressed that it was a 'fan-girl' moment for her.
"I saw royalty. @realshellyannfp please be my friend and not @sarah.hirini because she has heaps of famous friends already #olympics2024 #paris2024 #fangirl,"she wrote.
Soon after, they met in the Olympic village. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took to Instagram stories to share a glimpse of the match as she cheered for Blyde.
" Go Michaela, go," she said
Michaela Blyde on meeting Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce for the first time
After Blyde posted the video of seeing Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Olympic Village, the Jamaican athlete followed her on Instagram and they had a conversation about meeting each other. Michaela Blyde took to Instagram to share a compilation of her reactions from her Fraser-Pryce following her on Instagram to meeting the star Jamaican athlete for the first time.
Blyde mentioned that she went to meet the Jamaican athlete in a stained shirt and forgot her shoes due to her excitement.
"I just met my idol. In a stained shirt, baggy shorts and bare feet. @realshellyannfp you have no idea 😭❤️ this country kiwi kid is so happy 🥰 #olympics2024 #paris2024 #jamaicaathletics #jamaica #trackandfield #givemeyourspeed #cryin," she wrote.
Fraser-Pryce will be making her fifth and final Olympic appearance in Paris. The Jamaican athlete will be in action in the women's 100m heats on August 2, 2024.
