The Silesia Diamond League 2024 witnessed the return of many track and field athletes who had been on a break after the Paris Olympics 2024. The competition not just saw athletes setting personal bests, season bests, meet records, and national records across various events, but also featured two world records being broken in the men’s 3000m and pole vault disciplines.
The world record in the 3000m was obliterated by Norwegian sensation Jakob Ingebrigtsen at the Silesia Diamond League as he clocked a time of 7:17.55 to break the previous record which was set by Daniel Komen (7:20.67) in 1996. In the pole vault, Mondo Duplantis once again showed his class by breaking his own world record with a clearance of 6.26m at the Silesia Diamond League.
In the shot put, Joe Kovacs achieved a narrow win over compatriot and three-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser (22.12m). He won at the Silesia Diamond League with a best throw of 22.14m. Meanwhile, Grant Holloway made a comeback by defeating Rasheed Broadbell, avenging his earlier loss at the Lausanne Diamond League.
Letsile Tebogo produced yet another dominant performance in the men's 200m as he won in a meet record time of 19.83s, while the USA's Kenny Bednarek had to settle for the third position with a 20.00s. Whereas, the Paris Olympics bronze medalist Fred Kerley (9.87) secured a close victory in the 100m against Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala (9.88).
In the Siselia Diamond League, some other winners in the men's track and field events included Karsten Warholm in the 400m hurdles, Gianmarco Tamberi in the high jump, Soufiane El Bakkali in the 3000m steeplechase, and Marco Arop in the 800m.
In the women’s events at the Silesia Diamond League, Femke Bol, Ackera Nugent, Marileidy Paulino, Diribe Welteji, Tia Clayton, and Adriana Vilagos clinched victories in the 400m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 400m, 1500m, 100m and javelin throw events respectively.
