Simone Biles' former coach Cecile Landi penned a heartfelt note of gratitude to the Olympian for inviting her to the 'Simone Biles Rising Part 2' premiere night. Landi started coaching Biles in 2017 and even helped her take four podiums at the Paris Olympics before joining Georgia University as the gymnastics head coach.
Biles trained under Aimee Boorman at Bannon's Gymnastics until amassing five medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. But when the latter left the facility, Biles transitioned to training at World Champions Center, her home gym built by her parents Nellie and Ron Biles. In 2017, French gymnast and 1996 Olympian Cecile Landi and her husband Laurent Landi were appointed gymnastics coach at WCC.
Since then, the Landi couple has trained the seven-time Olympic gold medalist and helped her achieve multiple gold podiums at the World and Olympic levels. Even after Cecile Landi joined Georgia University as gymnastics head coach, she trained Biles for her 'redemption tour' to Paris.
On October 23, 2024, at the 'Simone Biles Rising Part 2' premiere night in Los Angeles, Landi witnessed her former tutee's journey to redeem the top spot in the French capital. Taking to her Instagram post, Cecile Landi penned a heartfelt note for the special invitation and lauded Biles' nature of caring for people around her.
"Such a special night celebrating the premiere of Simone Biles Rising on Netflix in Hollywood! Many thanks to Simone for sharing this night with us, I’m always in awe of you, no matter the accolades, you always stay true to yourself and truly care about the people around you," her caption read.
The 45-year-old also thanked the team and Biles' parents, writing:
"Congrats to @projectlifemedia @jbyfilm for such and amazing docuseries! And Thank you to @janeymiller94 and the Biles family for everything you’ve done for me!"
The docuseries 'Simone Biles Rising Part 2' was released on Netflix on October 25.
Cecile Landi realized the importance of mental health after Simone Biles' Tokyo Olympic heartbreak
The 30-time World medalist withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics after facing 'twisties' midway through her gymnastic maneuver. Since then, she has been a mental health advocate, normalizing conversations around the same and motivating fellow athletes struggling with it.
Her coach Cecile Landi was also impacted by Biles' decision to prioritize mental health over competition. She recalled her own competitive days as a French gymnast and how athletes' difficulties were overlooked.
"I think we try to listen a little bit more to the athletes because mental health was not real in the nineties for me. It was, ‘You are lazy, you just don’t want to do it,’ or any kind of things like that they would say to us," she said (via Olympics.com; January 3, 2023).
Landi also addressed the surge of mental health issues among the gymnasts after the Larry Nassar case at the USA Gymnastics. That impacted Biles as well, the topic she shed light on in the first part of her eponymous docuseries.
