Simone Biles' husband Jonathan Owens took pride in her as she received the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year honor after ushering in the New Year's. Biles became the most decorated gymnast in history after extending her Olympic medal count to 11 at the 2024 Paris Games.
Biles ruled out continuing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after facing a mid-air mental block during her vault performance. She only walked home with a bronze in the balance beam. However, in her third Games appearance, the 27-year-old made up for the loss and nabbed three golds and a silver, surpassing Shannon Miller's record of seven Olympic medals.
Months later, Sports Illustrated honored her with the 'Sportsperson of the Year' honor, sharing a celebratory post on its Instagram handle.
"Simone Biles is SI's 2024 Sportsperson of the Year"
Beaming with pride, the Olympian's husband Jonathan Owens took to his story to write:
"So proud of you baby"
He shared another story of his wife with a couple of brown heart emojis.
In SI's X post, Biles expressed gratitude for the honor she received in a speech, saying:
"I'm Simone Biles and I'm so excited to be Sportsperson of the Year. I think it's such a huge honor and a blessing that I have paved the way for the younger generations in gymnastics and hopefully will continue to do so."
Biles and Owens recently celebrated New Year's Eve cozied up inside the hotel room since the latter was fresh off his practice ahead of the Bears vs Packers clash on January 5, 2024.
Simone Biles stated that her plans to return to the Olympics would depend on her family and husband
Simone Biles made waves on the global stage since her first Olympic appearance in Rio in 2016. Having gained immense fame, love, and laurels, the 30-time World medalist talked about the sacrifices she would have to make to compete at the LA Olympics, now that she is starting a family with her husband Jonathan Owens.
"What sacrifices would be made if I go back now? When you’re younger, it’s like, prom, college. Now it’s like, starting a family, being away from my husband. What’s really worth it?” (via Sports Illustrated)
Apart from her Paris Olympics exploits, the 27-year-old also won gold in the all-around and floor events at the Core Hydration Classic. She also won all events at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships.
