Simone Biles penned a heartwarming note for her sister Adria on the former gymnast's 26th birthday. The seven-time Olympic champion shares a very strong bond with her sister and once said she acted like her mother during foster care.
Biles took to Instagram on Monday to send warm wishes to Adria, who turned 26 on January 27. The gymnast shared a picture of them from her 2023 wedding shoot and wrote:
"Happy 26th birthday sister. I love you so much."
While Simone was two years old when they were sent to foster care, Adria was less than a year and the gymnast used to take care of her. They were adopted by their grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, three years later, and recalling the moment they arrived in Spring, Texas, Simone wrote in her 2016 memoir, 'Courage to Soar: A Life in Balance, A Life in Motion':
"I was five and my sister was three. Grandma was a little worried about me at first: She noticed I was a lot more guarded than before. I was still bouncy and hyper, and I still acted like a little mother to Adria, but I was less talkative."
Both sisters took up gymnastics following their arrival in Texas, and while Simone went on to become the most decorated in history, Adria left the sport just before reaching the elite level in 2016.
"She quit because of pressure" - Simone Biles on why Adria left the gymnastics
Speaking in an interview with the Glamour in 2021, Simone Biles revealed that her sister Adria left gymnastics because people compared them with each other, and the 27-year-old felt unwanted pressure.
"My sister did gymnastics until she was about 17. She was level 9 gymnast, training for level 10. She was really good but she quit because of pressure and everybody compared her to me," Simone Biles said [3:40 0nwards]
Biles further added that her sister also used to win a lot of competitions, but people thought it wasn't fair.
"She used to win a lot of competitions too and people thought that wasn't fair and she was tired of people talking about it because whenever she went to competitions, they were like 'oh her sister always wins, she always wins, that's not fair.' So she quit," she added.
Adria registered a personal best score of 35.600 in the all-around competitions, and after giving up the sport, she has featured in the Houston Astros dance team and the inaugural edition of Claim to Fame in 2022.
