The fiercely contested artistic gymnastics team finals at the Bercy Arena showcased a thrilling battle between gymnasts. Among the highlights, Simone Biles displayed a playful reaction to her Brazilian counterpart, Rebeca Andrade, after finishing behind her on the uneven bars.
Simone Biles and her team were locking horns with their competitors in the team all-around finals on Tuesday, July 30, where the American side scored 171.296 points to become the Olympic champion. Italy claimed silver (165.494), while Brazil secured bronze (164.497). The defending champions, China, had to settle for a disappointing sixth-place finish.
As the title contenders faced off in the Bercy Arena, Biles delivered as expected, leading the U.S. with a stellar performance. She garnered scores of 14.666 on the floor exercise, 14.366 on balance beam, 14.900 on vault, and 14.400 on uneven bars. However, the American champion was edged out by her Brazilian counterpart and the reigning Olympic vault champion, Rebeca Andrade, in uneven bars.
Andrade outscored Biles by a 0.133 margin, achieving a score of 14.533. Furthermore, Andrade also posted the best vault score on the night of the final, finishing ahead of Biles with a score of 15.100. The American Olympian was in awe of the Brazilian's athleticism, as she was outperformed by her in the latter two apparatuses. Pop Time captured Biles' reaction and shared a picture of it on their X handle (formerly Twitter).
Simone Biles' views on Rebeca Andrade
After her Paris Olympics team event triumph, Simone Biles officially surpassed her compatriot Shannon Miller to become the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history. After adding gold to her kitty on Tuesday, Biles has now amassed a total of eight Olympic medals, breaking Miller's record of seven Olympic medals.
Despite her status as one of the greatest gymnasts ever, the Ohio-born Biles admitted in her Netflix documentary, "Simone Biles: Rising," that Rebeca Andrade scares her the most. Speaking about her Brazilian counterpart, Biles stated (as quoted by Forbes):
"I actually love competing with Rebeca. She does push me, she makes me want to stick all my landings."
She also added that Andrade is one of the most phenomenal gymnasts she has ever competed with. The 25-year-old State of São Paulo native reciprocated, stating that it's an honor for her to compete alongside Simone Biles.
