The newest Netflix docuseries, Simone Biles Rising, premieres on July 17, 2024, taking audiences on a journey into the legendary gymnast's story of perseverance. Director Katie Walsh joined hands with executive producers Ameeth Sankaran, Gotham Chopra, Giselle Parets, and Janey Miller to delve into the gymnast's Tokyo Olympic turbulence, 'twisties', and her grit to reclaim the top spot.

Biles, who won four golds and a bronze at her debut in the 2016 Rio Games, went to Tokyo as the clear favorite. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she experienced the "twisties," a mental block that affected her coordination in mid-air. This led to her withdrawal from the Games and a two-year hiatus to prioritize her mental health and and prepare for 'another Olympic run'.

Just a day before Part 1 hits the screens, Netflix released an official preview with American actress Viola Davis narrating Dr. Maya Angelou's poem, 'Still I Rise', the three words Simone Biles is most associated with.

Simone Biles Rising: Delving into the trailer of the four-episode series

On June 19, Netflix released a trailer showcasing Simone Biles' training regimen and personal life. The video montage opens up with Biles talking about how she didn't have a good feeling about the Tokyo Olympics even before she arrived in Japan.

"I've always had really good intuition about things. And unfortunately, I felt that way about the Olympics," Biles said in the video.

The Olympian went on to refer to the turmoil in Tokyo as a "trauma response," citing the lasting effects of her abusive childhood years with USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar and her early years in foster care.

"But everything that happened — it's a trauma response," she added.

Despite these hardships, Biles emerged as an inspiration for young girls, advocating for mental wellness. Despite contemplating quitting at one point in time, she returned for another Olympic run to set an example for the world.

"I knew it would be a long journey, but to me it wasn't done."

A part of the docuseries also documented Biles' mother, Nellie Biles, and husband, Jonathan Owens, who have seen the Olympian's journey from close quarters. In the trailer, Owens shared that his wife's comeback inspired him as well.

"She's bounced back, and she's really opened my eyes"

Biles concluded the trailer with a bold message, stating that she would write the ending of her story on her own.

"I get to write my own ending"

In a statement during the trailer launch, Biles revealed that the series will showcase a different side of her, beyond the competition mat.

The seven-time Olympic medalist will soon head to Paris after displaying stellar performances at the 2024 US Olympic Trials, scoring 117.225 in the all-around.
