Simone Biles won a record second all-around gymnastics title at the Paris Olympics 2024, becoming only the third gymnast in history to do so. Her biggest competitor Rebecca Andrade finished second but it was a highly close competition between the two best gymnasts of the world.

Both Biles and Andrade started on the vault competition. After the Brazilian recorded a score of 15.100, the American took the lead with a Yurchenko Double Peak, earning a massive score of 15.766. However, following the second rotation, Andrade was in the lead.

After a slip-up in her uneven bars routine, Andrade was leading the charts with more than 0.2 points. She would surely have been sensing a victory until the American performed one of the best balance beam routines of her career. Under pressure, Biles managed to score 14.566 while Andrade only managed 14.133, losing her lead in the process.

Simone Biles landed an incredible routine in the final exercise on the floor to earn a score of 15.066 while Andrade managed 14.033, settling for a silver medal. The final score for Biles read 59.131 while the Brazilian’s was 57.932.

At the Paris Olympics, the margin of victory for Biles was 1.199. The other occasion when they have been this close was at the 2023 World Championships, where the victory margin for the most decorated gymnast in history was 1.933. In addition to the scores, Andrade was nearly at her best, making the Paris Olympics 2024 all-around competition the closest between the two.

Simone Biles and Rebecca Andrade competed together for the first time at the 2016 Rio Olympics. While it was a historic campaign for the American, Andrade didn't win any medals in her home Games.

The two met again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, Biles withdrew and while Suni Lee took the all-around title, Andrade won the vault gold. The Paris Olympics 2024 marked their third Olympic Games together, and as the American won the gold medal, she claimed Andrade could win the next all-around title, which would be in Los Angeles.

Does that also hint at Simone Biles' retirement? Very likely. The 27-year-old has achieved everything there is, and the Paris Olympics 2024 could likely be her swansong on the Olympic stage.
