The Canadian Swimming Trials got done with its events on Day 4 and Summer McIntosh was the one name echoing at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Ontario. She stole the spotlight at the event after smashing her own world record in the 400m IM which was set by her at the Canadian Swimming Trials 2023.
After a remarkable performance on Day 1 and Day 2 of the competition, McIntosh did a phenomenal job again on Day 4 of the event. She cruised towards victory and made a new world record by clocking a time of 4:24:38. The crowd erupted in cheers after she surpassed her last year's world record of 4:25:87.
With this incredible win, Summer McIntosh earned her spot in the 400 IM for Paris Olympics 2024. Behind her in the second position was Ella Janses who clocked a time of 4:38.88 and sharing the podium with them was Mabel Zavaros in the third position with a time of 4:40.46.
Swimming enthusiast Kyle Sockwell took to his X account and shared the video of McIntosh achieving the magnificent feat. The post's caption read,
"NEW WORLD RECORD"
He further added,
"Summer McIntosh just SMASHED her own World Record in the 400IM with a 4:24.38 😵💫"
Summer McIntosh opens up about setting a new world record
Summer McIntosh was absolutely ecstatic after achieving this commendable feat. She expressed her excitement to compete in 400 IM at the Paris Olympics 2024. She revealed her main motive was to have fun at the event and is looking forward to participating in the Olympics.
"To just go out there and have fun, 400 IM is an event where it's all about strategy and pacing the front half and always trying to work that breaststroke because it is my weakest stroke, so I'm just excited to do it in Paris."
Along with this, the 17-year-old also praised the crowd for being enthusiastic. It helped her get more hyped up during the competition. She expressed,
"It was awesome, the crowd was absolutely electric. I heard all you guys during the breaststroke, it really kept me going, so thank you."
This is Summer's third win at the Canadian Swimming trials. On Day 1 she clinched gold in the 400m freestyle and on Day 2 of the event she nabbed a gold medal in the 200m freestyle.
She is yet to perform in three more events at the competition. In the upcoming days of the Olympic trials, the 17-year-old will be seen in the 100m freestyle, the 200m IM, and the 200m butterfly.
