Suni Lee posted her beam routine from the team finals at the 2024 Paris Games, calling it her best routine ever. Lee was part of the US women's gymnastics team that won the gold in its redemption tour. Suni Lee made her Olympic debut at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, winning the all-around gold to become the first Asian American gymnast to achieve such a feat.
Initially set to compete in the balance beam and uneven bars in the team final, Lee had to replace her teammate Simone Biles on the floor exercise when the latter withdrew midway, citing 'twisties.' Her efforts helped the US team clinch silver behind the Russian Olympic Committee.
At the Paris Olympics, she contributed scores in the floor exercise, uneven bars, and balance beam to the team's pole finish. Her achievement made her the first reigning champion to medal in the event in the next Games since Nadia Comaneci in 1980. She also won the uneven bars and all-around bronze in the French capital.
Months after the Games, Lee reminisced about her performance during the team finals, especially her balance beam maneuver, which, according to her, was the best she had ever done. (via Suni Lee Instagram)
"best beam routine I ever did," her story caption read.
The following story was the team's gold-winning moment, featuring her, Simone Biles, Hezly Rivera, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles jumping with joy.
Lee's journey to the Paris Olympic stage was marred by a kidney-related issue, diagnosed early in 2023. The six-time Olympic medalist missed most of her 2023 season, sat out of the World Championships, and ended her NCAA career with Auburn University prematurely.
Suni Lee once shared that the Olympic gold was more of an achievement since she contemplated quitting due to health reasons
Following her beam final performance, which didn't go as expected at the Paris Olympics, Lee shared that her appearance at the games was once far-fetched, with her coach, Jess Graba, asking her to pull out for her kidney-related issues.
Despite the setback, she maneuvered and became the third-most decorated US Olympian, tied with Aly Raisman. Taking pride in her perseverance, she said:
"I think there’s a lot of things to be proud of this time around, just because I had to overcome so much. There were days where I was fighting demons, and [my coach] Jess [Graba] was just like, ‘You know what? I don’t even know if this is for you anymore.’" (via Olympics.com)
She continued:
“There were times where he was like, ‘Maybe you should just be done here,’” she continued. “I was having the worst times.”
Suni Lee made several off-mat appearances in 2024, attending the New York Fashion Week, the US Open finals, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, the CFDA Fashion Awards, and others.
She was also named Glamour Women of the Year with other iconic women and graced the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue for the 2025 fold.
