After delivering a notable performance at the 2024 U.S. Xfinity Gymnastics Championships, Suni Lee will be seen competing at the last leg of the U.S. women's selection procedure for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 2024 U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials are scheduled to be held in Lee's hometown, Minnesota.
Lee secured a gold medal in the all-around event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after replacing Simone Biles, who withdrew from the competition to prioritize her mental health. Moreover, she also bagged a silver medal in the team and a bronze medal in the uneven bars.
Following the Olympics, she remained dormant from the sport, citing kidney issues, only to return in prime condition during the Paris Olympics season. At the recently held Gymnastics Championships in Texas from May 30 to June 2, Lee secured fourth place in the all-around event with a total of 110.65 points. She was placed in second position behind Simone Biles in the balance beam event after collecting 29.1 points.
With 20 days remaining for the Olympic Trials, Lee was seen refining her skills on the uneven bars, an apparatus on which she aimed to get the "Full Twisting Jaeger" named after her. She shared a video of her training session, where the Olympic medalist appears to flawlessly execute her element with complete control and perfect synchronization.
"It challenges me every day" - Suni Lee reveals the reason she loves gymnastics
Suni Lee's gymnastics journey so far has been nothing short of an exceptional redemption tale. Following her Tokyo Olympics feat, she joined the Auburn Tigers to compete at the collegiate level.
In March 2023, Lee was diagnosed with a rare kidney condition that prematurely ended her collegiate gymnastics career. However, unfazed by the adversities, she returned in August 2023 but soon stepped back from the mat, again citing kidney issues.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympic medalist returned to the sport she dearly loved in a better condition in 2024. During an interview with CNBC, she stated that she loves the sport because it challenges her to continuously strive for the best.
"I love gymnastics because it challenges me every day, it wakes me up in the morning because it motivates me to be a better person every day and I think that's the most important thing. Gymnastics is like art," Lee said at 00:01.
Suni Lee will be seen competing at the Olympic Trials held from June 27 to 30 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
