"It’s an honor" - When Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone had a track named after her in Dunellen following her Tokyo Olympics success
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone became an overnight track sensation when she broke the 400m hurdles world record at the US Olympic Trials for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, clocking 51.90 seconds to defeat the then-record holder Dalilah Muhammad. She went on to break the record again as she claimed the first Olympic title of her career with a time of 51.46 seconds in Tokyo, surpassing Muhammad once again.
McLaughlin-Levrone was also a part of the team that won a seventh consecutive women’s 4x400m relay title at the 2021 Games. After her Tokyo Olympics achievements, Dunellen honored her by naming a track after her. McLaughlin-Levrone was quoted as saying during the unveiling (via My Central Jersey):
"My sister was livestreaming my races on Instagram, screaming with my aunt at the TV like I could hear her. My town was changing signs every single day. It takes a support system. It takes a fiance who doesn’t sleep because of the time change and I’m constantly calling him at work because I’m stressed and nervous."
"I stand on that track and I stand on that podium as one person, but there are thousands and thousands behind me who are on my team. And I truly appreciate every single one of you for being here and supporting and screaming and just being a part of this community because at the end of the day, people may not know where Dunellen is, and I may have to tell them some landmarks so that they know, but we know, and I love all of you, and I truly appreciate it and it’s an honor to be here," she added.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone called it a day on her 2024 season following the Diamond League finals in Brussels, running the 200m and 400m flat invitational races at the competition.
