Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has been announced to compete in the Diamond League Finals in Brussels on September 13 and 14. It will be the American runner’s first appearance after the Paris Olympics and she will only run the 200m and 400m flat races instead of her signature 400m hurdles.
After ending her season early due to injury in 2023, McLaughlin-Levrone kicked off her 2024 season in April at the Mt. Sac Relays in the 4x100m relay. She ran her first individual race, 100m hurdles, at the Oxy Invitational before racing the 400m hurdles at Edwin Moses Legends Meet on May 31.
The 25-year-old raced the 400m hurdles next at the U.S. Olympic Trials, running a new world record time of 50.65s. A month later, she ran away with her second 400m hurdles Olympic title, clocking a blistering 50.37s at the Paris Olympics. After celebrating her birthday and gold medals with her husband Andre Levrone during a trip to Greece, the four-time Olympic gold medalist is now ready to try out new flat races.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will race in the 200m and the 400m flat events during the Diamond League Finals in Brussels. The women's 400m will take place on September 13 while the half-lap race will take place a day later on September 14th. She has competed in the events once each year, and it will also mark her only Diamond League competition of the year.
McLaughlin-Levrone ran 22.07s the last time she ran the 200m and clocked the second-fastest time in American history over 400m in 48.75s. Though the 25-year-old will face tough competition from the specialists of the respective events, she will nonetheless be among the top favorites. Sprinting star Sha'Carri Richardson has also been announced for the 200m dash, and a battle between the two Americans will be worth a watch.
Will Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone face Femke Bol again in 2024?
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone vs Femke Bol is one of the most exciting track rivalries and while the American has been stretching away the world record, the Dutch runner has kept following her.
When McLaughlin-Levrone ran a world record of 50.65s at the Olympic Trials, Bol followed it up with a 50.95s run a week before the Paris Olympics, becoming only the second runner in history to break the 51-second barrier. However, she couldn't replicate a similar performance at the Paris Olympics, settling for a bronze medal while McLaughlin-Levrone lowered the world record to 50.37s.
Bol ran at the Louisiana and Silesia Diamond League meets after the Paris Olympics and secured an impressive victory. However, she announced the end of her season soon after and will therefore not face Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in any of the events in 2024.
