Breakdancing, a new addition to the Olympics, has taken center stage on August 9 with the B-Girls competing in a round-robin tournament. Breaking was officially added to the list of Olympic sports in December 2021 after its viewership at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games reached one million. However, the inclusion didn't please most sporting fans after the first day.
In the round-robin tournament, one B-girl will go two rounds against the other three in their group (four groups four breakers). Every group will determine their top two breakers based on performances and advance them to the quarterfinals. B-Girl Nicka of Lithuania, Chinese B-Girls Ying Zi, B-Girl Ami of Japan, and B-Girl Syssy of France have already captured the eyes with their impressive performances.
Despite the increasing popularity, some fans didn't like the addition since Breakdancing didn't qualify as a proper sport to them. One X fan called it 'ABOMINATION' and drew a parallel with pub scenes in Ireland.
"I always like to give the new sports a chance, so can confirm it’s an ABOMINATION. The lowest bar ever to be cleared for an Olympic medal. This is like something you’d see outside Irish pubs at closing time."
Another fan called the sport 'cringe' when an Australian B-Girl was performing on stage.
"Olympic breakdancing… c’mon this not a sport, this isn’t anything except turbo cringe"
One fan expressed disbelief over an Olympic medal lined up for Breaking.
"Nah This Some B******. You Can Get A medal For This?"
Here are some of the other reactions:
"Ok breakdancing in the Olympics??? We got Step Up in the Olympics!!?? This shit is unbelievable!" commented a fan.
"I had to turn from Breakdancing. TAKE THIS RIGHT OUT THE OLYMPICS. It’s a Lithuanian girl with a durag on…" tweeted a fan.
"This is sad on another level of SAD. I don't want to discredit these dancers. But this is absurd," a fan wrote.
Snoop Dogg present at the inauguration of breakdancing at the Games
In a picture posted on X, Snoop Dogg was seen taking the spotlight in a Team USA ensemble. His presence at the sporting arenas during several events across the Olympics has delighted fans.
At the Olympics, the B-Girls and B-Boys will be judged based on execution, technique, musicality, vocabulary, and originality. No numerical system will be followed, rather, each of the judges can vote for their preferred Breakers. The women's completion began at 10 am E. T and will conclude with the finals at 2 pm E .T. The boys' competition will follow the same timings on August 10.
