Fans came in support of American gymnast Jordan Chiles after the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to revoke her controversial floor exercise bronze medal won at the Paris Olympics. The court has also ruled to return the bronze to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.
Chiles secured the first individual Olympic medal of her career on Monday, August 5, after placing third in the floor exercise finals, scoring 13.766 to finish behind Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade. However, she was initially given fifth place in the floor exercise finals with a score of 13.666, and the Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Voinea finished ahead of her.
But Team USA gymnastics coach Cecile Landi noticed that Chiles was rewarded with a lower difficulty score, which led to Landi opting to inquire about the decision. Later, Chiles' score was updated to 13.766, which eliminated Voinea and Barbosu from bronze medal contention. This led to outrage from the Romanian Olympic Committee officials and even their Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, who decided to skip the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
The Romanian Gymnastics Federation appealed Chiles' floor exercise result with the Court of Arbitration, which decided to give the medal back to Barbosu, but the final decision will be made by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). Gymnastics Now shared the update on their X handle, writing:
"The Romanian Gymnastics Federation says the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the bronze medal should be returned to Ana Barbosu, as Jordan Chiles’ inquiry was late. The FIG will make the decision on final ranking. Sabrina Maneca-Voinea’s appeal was rejected. About the same time of FRG’s post, Chiles posted that she is removing herself from social media for her mental health for the time being."
Fans also shared their take in the comment section of the tweet. A fan inquired:
"Is there a time stamp on the verbal inquiry? Bc aren’t they rules 1 min for verbal followed by a physical form within 4 minutes?"
Another fan tweeted:
"I am speechless. My heart hurts for Jordan [Chiles]. They should have awarded both the bronze. Not retroactively punished Jordan and stripped her of her medal."
"that's disgusting let jordan have her f**king medal" Commented a fan
"I'm sorry for Jordan, but the real culprits are the judges, they fucked up all these girls!" Wrote another
