Simone Biles' mother, Nellie Biles, revealed her initial to seeing the gymnast facing an injury scare during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nellie unveiled her side of the story during an episode of the second part of the Netflix series, Simone Biles Rising.
Simone Biles' Netflix docuseries, Simone Biles Rising, captures behind the scenes of the American gymnast's Paris Olympics campaign and details the hard work the 27-year-old put in to overcome her adversities.
In the third episode of part two of the docuseries, Simone Biles' mother, Nellie Biles talked about how she felt when her daughter had an injury scare during the Paris Olympics qualification round.
Simone Biles had sustained an ankle injury for which she was taken away from the podium briefly. The gymnast returned with a bandage wrapped around the affected area, which worried her mother Nellie, who wasn't aware of what was happening.
"That was a bad moment for me, simply because I did not know what was going on," Nellie Biles recalled. (39:20 onwards)
Simone Biles had a successful run at the Paris Olympics, grabbing four medals, which included three gold medals and one silver. She won her first gold in the team all-around event, as the US team scored 171.296 points. She then clinched her second and third gold medals in the individual all-around event and the vault exercise, respectively. She won a silver medal in the floor exercise, where she was defeated by Rebecca Andrade, who claimed first place.
Simone Biles opened up about how her parents calmed her down during the Paris Olympics
In season 2 of the Netflix series, Simone Biles Rising, the gymnast opened up about the significance of her parents' presence in the stands during her performance at the Paris Olympics (as quoted by Gymnastics Now):
"I look at them in the audience just to just calm me down, it's just a stress reliever. To have this experience in Paris where I could talk to them, go see them, it meant the world to me because again, these are memories we’ll cherish together," Biles said.
Furthermore, in an interview with Gymnastics Insider during the premier of Simone Biles Rising: Part Two, the American gymnast mentioned how her husband, Jonathan Owens, was her 'comfort person'.
"He's my comfort person. I looked to him even after I had one of the bar mistakes (at the Olympics). I just looked at him and he's like, 'You're fine, calm down.'"
Biles became the most decorated US Olympic gymnast with 11 Olympic medals to her name, surpassing Shannon Miller.
The 27-year-old is currently performing in the Gold Over America Tour and will be seen alongside her team on October 29 in Indianapolis. The second edition of the G.O.A.T tour will wrap up on November 3 in Detroit.
