Less than a year after Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens got married in April 2023, the couple had found themselves in the middle of a controversy around the NFL safety's comments. Owens has now come out and said they blocked out the noise, adding the people commenting didn't know the couple or their 'story.'
Owens, who signed with the Chicago Bears in 2024, claimed he didn't know who Biles was when they met in 2020. The 29-year-old faced criticism online after his comments before Biles publicly called out the critics and showed support for her husband.
Owens has now opened up about his criticism and how he handled it. Speaking with the New York Post in an interview, he said the best way to handle it was to block out the noise and focus on being one's "authentic self."
"“The easiest way [to handle it] is just, try to tune out the noise because people are always going to have something to say whether you’re doing good or bad. So the best thing to do is do it your way and just be your authentic self because this is where you want to be in life," he said.
Owens also had a word to say for the critics, saying:
“I have a strong support system. And the people that are commenting or saying things about you, they don’t know you personally, they don’t know your story, or they don’t know what you go through every day and how much you do for people."
Owens and Biles met in 2020 and after two years of dating, they exchanged rings in 2022 before tying the knot in a double marriage ceremony last year. The couple have been fairly public about their close relationship and during an appearance on a show "Pivot" in late 2023, Owens said that he was the "catch" for the Olympic gymnast in their relationship.
When Simone Biles broke down after Jonathan Owens faced online abuse
Simone Biles has expressed her admiration and love for her husband Jonathan Owens numerous times over the four years of their relationship, and when the Chicago Bears’ safety came under public scrutiny, the seven-time Olympic champion was fully in support of his comments. Speaking earlier this year, Biles said,
"He never said I wasn't a catch. He said he was a catch because he is. I've never met a man like him. A lot of people that meet him are like, 'oh my gosh! I want a man like that, like Jonathan'" (via People).
Biles had also recalled that she found the criticism to be hilarious at first but when it didn't stop, she "broke down."
"And, like, he doesn't even like to say divorce. So I thought it was hilarious at first, and then they hurt my feelings. Then, like, one night, I broke down, and I'm like, 'Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?'," she added.
Jonathan Owens' image has significantly improved following the Paris Olympics 2024 as the NFL safety was frequently spotted supporting Simone Biles during the gymnastics events.
