Ryan Lochte's wife, Kayla Lochte, lauded the former swimmer for his determination as he heals from the car accident injuries he sustained in November last year. Lochte crashed into a garbage truck on his way to pick up his children from school.

Lochte, the third-most decorated swimmer behind Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, was driving to pick up his children from school when he hit the corner of a garbage truck parked in the street.

The car on his front abruptly deviated to miss the truck and Lochte lacked time to perform the same maneuver, breaking his femur in half and suffering head injuries. The investigators were initially sure the 40-year-old was dead. In the Athlete's podcast earlier this year, Lochte revealed the details of his accident but wished to conceal until he completely recovered.

In a recent Instagram post, his wife, Kayla Lochte, shared a video montage of the swimmer's healing journey, his transition from being pushed around in a wheelchair to running down the field.

She wrote in appreciation:

"Life’s setbacks may knock you down, but they set the stage for an even stronger comeback! This guy has been putting in the work one step at a time, literally."

Deeply driven by his faith in God, Lochte shared that God decided the outcome of his crash during an interview earlier this year. He also opened up about getting back the visions every time he got inside the car to go to physical therapy. He said (via Swimming World Magazine):

"God was watching me, and he was like, ‘It’s not your time. I still get scared when I get in the car to go to physical therapy. I still have visions of the wreck."

Since the incident was an inch away from taking him away, Lochte expressed gratitude every time he woke up to his family:

"When I wake up, I’m so thankful. In a blink of an eye, your life can be over. I’m so thankful that no one got injured except me.”

Swimming has been a major part of Ryan Lochte's physical therapy

Ryan Lochte shared that his long-time coach, Gregg Troy, from the University of Florida, helped him rekindle his love for swimming after noting that it would help the Olympian in physical therapy.

As per Swimming World Magazine, the 40-year-old swam "once or twice a week" to accelerate his healing journey. Troy also joked that Lochte might break a master's world record but the latter didn't have anything in foresight.
