Noah Lyles has rallied behind NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill following his controversial detention by police before Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Olympic champion slammed the authorities and also repeated Hill’s comment, ‘what if it wasn't me?’
Lyles and Hill exchanged trash talk earlier this month after the Miami Dolphins' star claimed he would beat Lyles in a sprint race. However, the Olympic champion was unfazed at first, claiming Hill was just chasing ‘clout’.
The Dolphins’ WR replied with a 50-yard challenge, a distance less than 50m which wasn't acceptable. Lyles claimed that if somebody wanted to challenge the ‘world’s fastest man’, he had to do it in the 100m. However, that conversation has died down as the NFL season kicked off.
Tyreek Hill was detained outside Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning in a dispute over a raised car window. A bodycam footage released on Monday showed the Dolphins’ WR being dragged out of the car and getting handcuffed aggressively on the ground.
Despite their initial feud, Lyles expressed support for Hill online, writing:
"Disgusting. Tyreek said something very important In his post game interview. What if it wasn’t him. This is what they do to us when they feel they might get in trouble. What do you think they do to us when they know they won’t get in trouble"
“You can't just jump the line because you are a great football player” - Noah Lyles to Tyreek Hill
Noah Lyles didn't think Tyreek Hill was serious about racing him. He repeatedly said that he wanted a legit race and not just the gimmicks.
“I mean, if somebody wants to sponsor the event and we’re racing for millions of dollars and it’s on a track and we’re running 100 meters, then sure, we can race,” Lyles told NBC News.
“But it has to be legit. I’m not here to do gimmicks. You’re racing against a guy who has worked his whole life to get the title of ‘the world’s fastest man,’ and you’ve worked to be a great football player. You can’t just jump the line because you’re a great football player.”
None of the athletes have spoken about the challenge since, and although it looks unlikely, there's an outside chance of the race happening if Noah Lyles drops to 60m, a better-suited distance for Tyreek Hill than 100m.
