2024 saw numerous American female athletes dominate their respective disciplines. They include Gabby Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and Sha'Carri Richardson among others. These women not only impressed at the Olympic Games but also proved their mettle in events leading up to and following the quadrennial event.
In the women’s 100m, Sha'Carri Richardson, Melissa Jefferson, and Jacious Sears were some of the best performers this year. Let’s take a look at the five fastest 100m athletes among American women in 2024.
#5 Twanisha Terry (10.89s)
Twanisha Terry is among the five quickest American 100m runners in 2024. The 25-year-old made this list courtesy of her impressive performance at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.
In the women’s 100m finals, she clocked a time of 10.89 seconds, finishing third and earning a spot in her first Olympic Games in Paris.
#4 Aleia Hobbs (10.88s)
Aleia Hobbs is another prominent feature in the top five American women in the 100m this year.
The American 60m indoor record holder achieved the feat at the LSU Alumni Gold in Bernie Moore Stadium, where she ran a time of 10.88s to win the finals.
#3 Melissa Jefferson (10.80s)
Melissa Jefferson has the third-fastest time among Americans in the 2024 season. The Paris Olympics bronze medalist came in second in the finals of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, with a time of 10.80s. This gave her a 100m spot on the USA squad for the quadrennial games.
Jefferson had a year to remember as she went on to win the bronze medal in her maiden Olympic appearance in Paris, running a time of 10.92s.
#2 Jacious Sears (10.77s)
Jacious Sears is the second-quickest female 100m athlete of the season. The athlete from the University of Tennessee delivered a remarkable performance at the Tom Jones Memorial, recording a time of 10.77s. This was the fastest time recorded this year until Sha'Carri Richardson broke the record at the Olympic trials.
#1 Sha'Carri Richardson (10.71s)
USA sprinting star Sha'Carri Richardson is the fastest woman on the list this year. She achieved her best time at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials when she put on a time of 10.71s in the finals of the 100m.
With this, she earned a well-deserved spot on the USA’s track and field team for the Paris Olympics. Sha'Carri Richardson had missed out on the previous edition of the Olympics after receiving a one-month ban by the USATF for testing positive for marijuana, which she had used to cope with her mother's passing.
Entering the event as the favorite in the 100m, the American was stunned by St Lucia’s Julien Alfred in the finals. With a national record performance, Alfred scripted history for her country by winning their first-ever gold at the Olympics.
