The 200m sprint event, commonly called the half-lap race, witnessed remarkable performances in 2024 courtesy of top performers like Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo, Kenny Bednarek, and many others. These athletes showcased their speed and skill at major competitions such as the Olympics, Diamond League, and World Athletics Continental Tour meetings.
Having said that, let’s take a look at the top five fastest male sprinters in the 200m during the 2024 season.
5) Tarsis Gracious Orogot
Although Tarsis Orogot couldn’t impress track and field fans during his Paris Olympics campaign, the Ugandan athlete had his moments. His personal best of 19.75 seconds, achieved while competing for the University of Alabama, ranks him fifth globally in the event.
4) Courtney Lindsey
Courtney Lindsey, who helped the USA relay team secure a quota for the Paris Olympics at the 2024 World Athletics Relays, is among the fastest 200-meter sprinters this season.
With his remarkable run of 19.71s at the Kip Keino Classic in April, he stands out as the fourth-fastest athlete in the half-lap race in 2024.
3) Kenny Bednarek
Kenny Bednarek enjoyed a memorable 2024 season, culminating in his maiden Diamond League title in the 200-meter sprint. His consistent performances throughout the year were rewarded with a victory over reigning Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo (19.80s) at the Brussels Diamond League, where Bednarek clocked a time of 19.67 seconds.
However, the two-time Olympic silver medalist's fastest time of the 2024 season came at the Zurich Diamond League, where he finished second with a time of 19.57 seconds
2) Noah Lyles
Noah Lyles' impressive performance at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials made him the second-fastest male 200-meter sprinter of the season. In the finals of the 200m, Lyles stormed to a comprehensive win in a time of 19.53s, ahead of Kenny Bednarek (19.69s) and Erriyon Knighton (19.77s).
Despite his dominating show in the trials, he couldn't replicate a similar display at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After becoming the Olympic champion in the men’s 100m, Lyles contracted COVID-19. As a result of illness, the six-time world champion was unable to deliver his best performance and had to settle for a second consecutive bronze in the Olympic event.
1) Letsile Tebogo
Letsile Tebogo’s sensational 19.46s in the men’s 200m final at the Olympics not only earned him the gold medal but also made him the fastest in the discipline in 2024. After the Olympics, no one could match his incredible speed, making 19.46 seconds the fastest time of the season.
This performance by Tebogo not only earned Botswana their first-ever gold medal in the Olympic Games but also smashed his own African record of 19.50s, previously set at the 2023 London Diamond League.
