The London Diamond League is the last big meet before the Paris Olympics 2024 kick starts on July 26, and several top athletes have entered the competition to check their form ahead of the quadrennial event. Many American athletes are favorites for gold in multiple events and are slated to contest in the British capital on 20th July.
From sprinting sensation Noah Lyles to reigning pole vault champion Katie Moon, American stars are concluding their practice at their training bases as they head for a month-long tour to Europe. Let's take a look at the top American athletes competing at the London Diamond League on July 20th.
American athletes competing at the London Diamond League
#Ryan Crouser
Ryan Crouser was nursing an elbow injury earlier this season and didn't compete for most of the season before the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. He won the Shot Put trials with a massive throw of 22.84m ahead of Joe Kovacs. The world record holder is now set to compete at the London Diamond League.
#Joe Kovacs
Joe Kovacs and Ryan Crouser will go head to head in London for the last time before the Paris Olympics 2024. Though Kovacs has shown impressive form this year and is also the world leader in the competition this year with a throw of 23.13m, he lost to Crouser at the trials, only managing 22.43. The 35-year-old will look to defeat Crouser in London and head into the Olympic Games as the favorite.
#Katie Moon
Katie Moon is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the women's pole vault competition. However, her season has been marred by injuries. She did manage to qualify for the Paris Olympics, finishing second at the Olympic trials. Moon has expressed optimism over her recovery and will go head-to-head against British record-holder and 2024 World Indoor champion Molly Caudery at the London Diamond League for the first time this season.
#Gabby Thomas
Gabby Thomas has raced little this season but whenever she has, she has looked in top form. The American holds the world lead in the 200m with a blistering run of 21.78 from the Olympic Trials, and would surely be looking to set fast times before the Olympics start. Britain's Daryl Neitat and Amy Hunt and fellow American Tamara Clark will be some of her top competitors at the London Diamond League.
#Noah Lyles
Noah Lyles withdrew from the Monaco Diamond League last week to focus on his training before leaving for Europe. The world champion is slated to compete in the 100m at the London Diamond League. Viewers could be up for something special in the British capital, as Lyles will face Zharnel Hughes, Letsile Tebogo, Ackeem Blake, and Yohan Blake. He will be looking to go faster than his personal best of 9.83s ahead of the Olympic Games.
