Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has claimed that her focus of the season is on big championships which is why she doesn't compete regularly in the other events. The 25-year-old is set to run in two Invitational races at the Diamond League Finals in Brussels.
McLaughlin-Levrone started her season with a 4x100m relay event at the Mt. Sac Relays. She raced over the 200m and 400m flat once each before opening up in the 400m hurdles. She broke the world record twice in the distance in the following months, winning her second Olympic title in the event as well.
The world champion hasn't raced since the Olympics and was initially announced to be competing in the Diamond League Finals. However, since she wasn't eligible for the finals, two special Invitational races were announced for McLaughlin-Levrone at the Brussels Diamond League, where she will run the 200m and 400m flat.
Speaking in an interview ahead of her races in Brussels, McLaughlin-Levrone shed some light on her schedule for the season, claiming that her focus was on major championships. She said (via Athletics Weekly):
“My season always revolves around the major championships, and I put together my programme with my coach Bobby Kersee based on those. Additionally, I already have to be in top form at the US trials to be allowed to go to the Olympics at all. So, attending meetings in Europe in between is not obvious, transcontinental trips are quite tiring."
McLaughlin-Levrone has lowered the 400m hurdles by nearly two seconds in the last three years, and she is equally competitive on the 400m flat track
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone looking to improve her personal bests in the 200m and 400m
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone holds a personal best of 48.74s in the 400m, the second fastest time in American history, and earlier this year, the hurdler ran 48.75s in her first race of the season.
Over the 200m, the 25-year-old holds a personal best of 22.07, which she clocked earlier this year at the LA Grand Prix. Now as she gears up for her second and last appearances of the year over those distances, McLaughlin-Levrone hopes to improve her lifetime best times.
She said (via Athletics Weekly):
"My goal is to improve my personal records. I started my season this spring in the 200m and 400m and now I would like to finish with them as well, assess where I stand at those distances now, after having focused a whole year on the 400m hurdles.”
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will look to break her PR in at least one of the distances in Brussels, Belgium, where she will compete over the 400m on the 13th and 200m on the 14th.
