After an exciting day of men's events on Thursday, June 27, it was the women's turn to shine on Friday at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials. To no one's surprise, Simone Biles leads the all-around score after day one, having posted a stunning 58.900, putting her well out of reach of her closest competitors.

Biles opened her night on the uneven bars, walking away with a 14.425 with a slight hop on the landing. She then moved onto the beam, which was her weakest event on the opening day. A shaky routine saw the Olympic champion score a 13.650.

However, the 26-year-old was back on track for floor and vault, two of her strongest events. She scored a 14.850 in the former and a whopping 15.975 on the latter. While this hasn't been Biles' strongest showing, it was more than enough to give her the lead.

Currently second in the all-around at the U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials is Jordan Chiles. The Tokyo Olympian opened her campaign strong, posting a 14.100 on the floor. She then went on to impress on the vault and uneven bars with scores of 14.325 and 14.350.

Chiles’ Tokyo teammates, Suni Lee and Jade Carey, also put together some stunning routines on Friday. Lee, the all-around champion from 2020, topped the charts for the balance beam with her 14.400.

Meanwhile, Carey, Olympic gold-medalist on the floor, proved her prowess at the event. She upgraded her third tumbling pass in her routine to a tucked double double, scoring a 14.075. She also walked away with a 14.600 in the vault.

Elsewhere, the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials brought heartbreak for Shilese Jones as she withdrew from three of the four events after injuring herself on the vault warm-up.

The World Championships medalist limped away from the mat in pain but came back to perform her uneven bars routine, posting a 14.675, the highest score of the event on day one. However, she chose not to compete in the vault, floor, or balance beam events.

Another notable withdrawal from the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials was that of Kayla DiCello, who also injured herself while warming up for the vault on Friday. Skye Blakely is also out of running for the team, having ruptured her achilles during podium training for the competition.
