For the first time since London Olympics 2012, the U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team will be heading to the Olympics without either Alex Morgan or Megan Rapinoe. The team's current manager Emma Hayes has preferred a change of guard, due to which only 8 members from the bronze medal winning squad of Tokyo Olympics have been retained, including midfielder Lindsey Horan and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to name a few.
While the skipper is not named yet, here is the official U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team for the Paris Olympics 2024:
Goalkeepers: Casey Murphy, Alyssa Naeher
Defenders: Tierna Davidson, Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Casey Krueger, Jenna Nighswonger, Emily Sonnett
Midfielders: Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Catarina Macario
Forwards: Crystal Dunn, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson
Alternates: Jane Campbell [Goalkeeper], Hal Hershfelt [Midfielder], Croix Bethune [Midfielder], Lynn Williams [Forward]
Among these, the ones to look out for would be goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, midfielders Lindsey Horan and Catarina Macario, and forwards Crystal Dunn and Mallory Swanson. Not only are they the most experienced of the lot, they're also among the rare few who have experienced the victory at 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, as well as the podium finish at Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Lindsey Horan is in fact the most experienced of all. With 148 appearances, and at least 35 goals, she aims to make her mark at the Paris Olympics 2024. Mallory Swanson may not have been a part of the squad at Tokyo Olympics, but her experience at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup will definitely come handy.
U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team's record at the Summer Olympics
The U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team is appearing for the eighth consecutive time at the Paris Olympics 2024, ever since the event was introduced at Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
Except for Rio Olympics in 2016, the women's team have never returned empty handed. Out of 7 occasions, the U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team have won 4 gold medals, the last one coming from London Olympics 2012. Overall, the U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team have won 4 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, making it the most successful team in this edition.
In their previous appearance at Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Team USA had stormed into the semifinals, where they lost to Canada by a whisker. However, they bounced back in style, when they won the bronze medal, defeating Australia by 4-3.
USA will be facing Zambia in their opening match at Paris Olympics 2024. They're placed with Germany and Australia in Group A of the women's soccer tournament at Paris Olympics 2024.
