U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials Results: Gretchen Walsh sets 100m world record to grab a spot for finals, Katie Ledecky dominates 400m Freestyle | Day 1

With only 40 days left for the 2024 Paris Olympics, several American swimmers are vying for a spot at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials 2024. The U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials kicked off on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Day 1 of the Trials featured a few prelims, semi-finals, and finals for 100m butterfly, 400m freestyle, and 100m breaststroke. The nine-day event will conclude on Sunday 23, 2024. Day 1 of the Trials witnessed an electrifying performance from Gretchen Walsh, who earned a spot to compete in the finals of the 100m butterfly event, by registering a world record of 55.18 seconds.

She broke the previous world record of 55.48 seconds, set by Sarah Sjoestroem in 2016. To achieve this feat, she defeated Torri Huske and Regan Smith, who recorded 55.79 and 55.92, respectively. She will compete in the finals of the 100m butterfly event on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

Katie Ledecky earned her first Olympic spot in one out of four events that she will compete in at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials 2024. Ledecky posted a commendable time of 3:58.35 to register a championship record in the women's 400m freestyle, defeating Madden Paige (4:02.08) and Cox Jillian (4:06.89).

After finishing fourth in the prelims of the men's 400m freestyle, Aaron Shackell dominated the lineup in the finals at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials, clocking an impressive time of 3:45.46. The results of the preliminary rounds on Day 1 of the 2024 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials are given below.
