U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials Results: Katie Ledecky tops 200m freestyle, Ryan Murphy punches ticket to third consecutive Games | Day 3

Day three of the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials saw America getting to know their Olympians for the women's 400m individual medley, the men's 100m backstroke, and the men's and women's 200m freestyle. Monday night also saw the first American relay teams getting chosen in the competitive men's and women's 200m free events.

The first final on June 17 at the Lucas Oil Stadium was the women's 400m individual medley. Katie Grimes, who made her Olympic debut as a 15-year-old when she competed in Tokyo, was the one who stormed to gold. Grimes was already assured a berth to the Games having qualified for the 10k open water swimming event last year. Now, her 4:35.00 guarantees her an appearance in the pool as well.

Likely joining her at the Paris Olympics will be the Tokyo 400m individual medley silver-medalist Emma Weyant, who finished second.

The next final on tap at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials was the men's 200m freestyle. Giving the audiences a big upset, collegiate stars Luke Hobson and Chris Guilano outdid World Champion Drew Kibler and Olympic medalist Kieran Smith to take the top two spots. Hobson and Guilano will represent Team USA in the individual 200m free later this summer, while Kibler and Smith join them for the 4x200m relay.

Meanwhile, the women's 200m freestyle final saw Katie Ledecky do what she does best, leaving the field behind by more than a second to clinch gold. Finishing behind her was Claire Weinstein with a 1:56.18. Joining them for the relay, as the USA tries to reclaim their gold, will be Paige Madden and Erin Gemmell.

For Ledecky, a familiar face on the team that heads to Paris will be Ryan Murphy, as her teammate from the 2016 and 2020 Games won the men's 100m backstroke. In an impressive race, Murphy finished half a second ahead of World Champion Hunter Armstrong, who is also likely to make it to his second consecutive Olympics later this year.

Elsewhere at the U.S Swimming Olympic Trials, Lilly King emerged as the champion in the women's 100m breaststroke finals on home ground. With this, King will now get a chance to reclaim her Olympic gold in the event. In an upset for second place, University of Virginia swimmer Emma Weber outdid Lydia Jacobs to deny the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist a chance to defend her title.
